MWPHA currently seeks an action-oriented individual with leadership qualities to assist in communications aspects for the organization.
MWPHA is an American Public Health Association (APHA) affiliate and a regional association of individuals and organizations working to improve the health of the Metropolitan Washington region.
Summary of essential job functions
· To assist communication chair in implementing an internal and external communications plan and attend committee meetings.
· Work with MWPHA volunteer members and the Governing Council to find effective methods to communicate organizational activities and increase membership participation
· Assist chair in creating MWPHA introductory video and other communication materials.
· Draft and finalize the quarterly MWPHA newsletter “Metro Health”. Candidate is responsible for finalizing content, working with committee chair to design the final layout, and distributing newsletter MWPHA members.
Minimum requirements
Some prior communications knowledge required including social networking, media campaigns and message development, web/graphic design, and marketing. Intern should be able to dedicate at least five hours per week to job duties. This is an unpaid opportunity.

· Describe the intersection between HIV and violence against women
· Identify gender-specific risks that influence women's vulnerability to HIV and violence
· Identify three (3) possible prevention and intervention strategies for intimate partner violence and HIV/AIDS services.
Amelia Cobb, MPH and Talia Fox, M.Ed will present this free workshop. This workshop is free except for CHES, Nursing or Social Work credit.

On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration approved Merck & Co.'s human papillomavirus vaccine Gardasil as safe and effective at protecting males from genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11. FDA approved the vaccine's use by males ages 9-26. Gardasil is already approved for use by females ages 9-26 to prevent cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancer, precancerous lesions, and genital warts.

With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Department of Sociology at Vanderbilt University will recruit new Ph.D. students whose research interests include health and health policy. The students will earn a doctorate from Vanderbilt’s Department of Sociology, be trained with a concentration in health and health policy, and participate in the Robert Wood Johnson Meharry-Vanderbilt Center for Health Policy. At the core of the Center’s mission is the education of a new generation of leaders in health and health policy studies, leaders whose diversity reflects the full diversity of the U.S. population. As such, the Center represents a collaborative effort between Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt’s Department of Sociology. Meharry Medical College is the nation’s oldest historically black medical school. Vanderbilt’s Department of Sociology offers a vibrant and flexible Ph.D. program with 18 full-time faculty members and 25 students.
The new Ph.D. students will receive a generous funding package which includes a base stipend of $17,500, an additional $10,000 topping-up award, $4,500 in summer funding, a full-tuition waiver, and health insurance.

The DOH is currently asking for volunteers to help work flu clinics throughout the district.
In an effort to protect District residents from the H1N1 virus, the DOH encourages District residents to seek out the H1N1 vaccine via our mass vaccination clinics. The Department of Health’s H1N1 vaccine clinics are currently being offered to priority groups, at no cost. Vaccine clinics for all District residents will be announced at a later date.
If you fall into the following priority groups listed below, it is encouraged you receive the H1N1 vaccine:
· Pregnant women
· Children and young adults from 6 months to 24 years
· People caring for infants under 6 months of age
· People aged 25 to 64 years with underlying medical conditions, such as asthma or diabetes
